With the twenty-fifth pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select…
25. Houston Texans: Garett Bolles, OT | Utah
That’s right not a quarterback. I could most definitely be wrong, (as I will most likely be for 90% of these picks come draft day) and the Texans could go with a QB like Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson or DeShone Kizer at this spot. However I don’t think any of these prospects is the next Texans franchise quarterback and can lead Houston to the promise land in the next 3 years. These kids need time to develop, something coach Bill O’Brian and company don’t have much of. Kudos to the Texans for offloading Brock Osweiler’s ridiculous contract to the Browns this offseason, and my sincerest apologies for missing out on the Tony Romo sweepstakes. Romo might have been the missing piece for this team to get past the Patriots. Then again this team has started 8 different quarterbacks since 2014 and has still managed to capture the AFC South title the last two years. Probably no coincidence their defense finished in the top 5 (#1 last year) those two seasons. The Texans were 29th if offense last season which makes everyone think this pick will be on that side of the ball. Call me crazy but what if they decide to go defense and the rich get richer?
Looking at the Texans projected 2017 depth chart the front seven should be even more improved with the return of a healthy JJ Watt which should scare people. Imagine they grabbed another outside pass rusher like a Tak McKinley if he’s still on the board? In the secondary the Texans have good depth at corner even with the loss of AJ Bouye to the division rival Jaguars. I’m not a fan of who they have lined up at safety with KJ Dillon and Andre Hal. Who? A safety like Obi Melifonwu would be an awesome pick. There is a lot of depth in this draft on the defensive side of the ball so I think the Texans most likely look at the offense.
A tight end like David Njoku would give Tom Savage or whoever starts at quarterback another weapon in the passing game. CJ Fiedorowicz had a solid season but the Texans run a lot of two tight end sets and could use depth at the position. I think in this case with offensive linemen Cam Robinson and Garett Bolles still on the board the Texans will look to upgrade their right tackle spot. Current slated starter Derek Newton had a freak injury against the Broncos last season, tearing both patellar tendons in his knees. I don’t know how you come back from something like that, but even if he were to return healthy, he wasn’t playing at a very high level before the injury. I got Bolles to the Texans here at 25 to shore up the right side of that o-line.
